When viewing tracking for a given shipment, you may come across a status update (also known as a scan) that you need additional clarification for, especially if a customer is inquiring about it. Below is a list of most tracking statuses, along with an explanation for each.
While shipping through FedEx, UPS, and USPS is typically smooth, it’s important to understand tracking statuses since there are times when packages can be delayed for a variety of reasons - such as the pandemic, issues with customs clearance, wrong address, bad weather, traffic jams, package refusal, or issues with lost or stolen packages.
|DELIVERED||This appears when your package has been delivered and is ready for collection at the designated address.|
|A package has experienced a delivery difficulty due to unforeseen events, wrong address, customer not being available to pick up the package, or business closure.|
|NEW||Shipment information for the package has been sent to the carrier, and the order has been picked up.|
|IN TRANSIT||A package is at a local carrier facility or has left the carrier origin facility and will be delivered on the originally scheduled delivery date and time.|
|OUT FOR DELIVERY||The package has already been dispatched to a delivery driver and will soon be delivered to the recipient.|
|CLEARANCE DELAY||This is for international orders experiencing customs clearance delays.|
|UNABLE TO DELIVER PROBLEM WITH ADDRESS||One or more of the address elements were incorrect, so the carrier couldn’t make the delivery.|
|FORWARDED||USPS forwarded the package to the recipient’s new address they have on file. Mail forwarding is requested by the recipient.|
|DEAD MAIL/SENT TO RECOVERY CENTER||The carrier can’t deliver, forward, or return the package for whatever reason, so they sent it to the Mail Recovery Center.|
|NO SUCH NUMBER||Some part of the address was missing or invalid, like an incorrect suite number or a typo in the street address.|
|INSUFFICIENT ADDRESS||The carrier can’t deliver the package because there isn’t enough information in the provided address (e.g., missing apt #).|
|MOVED, LEFT NO ADDRESS||The recipient moved and failed to set up a forwarding address.|
|ADDRESSEE UNKNOWN||No one knows the recipient at the address provided.|
|RECEPTACLE BLOCKED||The path to the delivery receptacle was physically blocked somehow.|
HELD AT POST OFFICE CUSTOMER REQUEST
|The recipient requested USPS to hold the package at the destination Post Office.|
|The delivery driver couldn’t access the delivery location (e.g., a gated community with an access code).|
Please note, wording of each status might vary slightly depending on the carrier. For example, when a FedEx shipment is out for delivery, the status may read as "On FedEx Vehicle for Delivery" but means the same thing as "Out For Delivery".
